The modified pension scheme overcomes shortcoming of NPS

According to RBI the total pension disbursed by states and UTs in 2023 -24 was more than five lakh crore , which is 6- 21 % of their revenue receipts . Such a high percentage spent on pensions only makes it hard for the government to spend on developmental projects .

New Pension Scheme (NPS) was brought to curb this , under NPS deduction for pension was invested in the equity market , on retirement one had to get part of it as a lump sum and part to be reinvested .

Pensioners were not happy with NPS . It was also a major political agenda for Congress as they had rollbacked to OPS in many states .q

The Old Pension Scheme employed used to get 50 % of his last drawn salary .

The Center has launched the Unified Pension System ( UPS ) , the difference from OPS is that the pensioner will have to put 10 % of funds from their account , which earlier was solely borne by the government .

The editorial says that UPS is a middle path on NPS and OPS and should be welcomed by all .
