Extra 100 gram crushes Vinesh’s Olympic dreams

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday was disqualified from Olympics for being overweight  . She was to play her final match for the Gold medal against Sarah Hidebrandt Of US. The match was scheduled 10:00 PM IST on Wednesday.

Vinesh was competing in the 50 kg category . She had defeated Cuban Yuneliys Vuzman Lopez in the elimination round .

Vinesh was found to be overweight by 100 grams . 

Weight is measured every morning of  the match day in Olympics , for finals weight is measured for two consecutive mornings including on match day . The rules say that if a wrestler does not participate or fails in weight test , then she shall be disqualified and will be put at the bottom or ranking .

Cuban Guzman Lopez who Lost to  Vinesh in semifinals will take her place in finals .

The Wrestling Federation of India ( WFI ) and Indian Olympic Association ( IOA ) approached the United World Wrestling ( UWW ) , the governing body but could not get any exemption .

The matter was raised in parliament . Sports minister Mansukh MAndviya said that the government had provided the best facilities to its sportspeople  .

Yunus to take oath today ; BNP calls for urgent polls , transfer of power

An interim government  headed by Nobel Laureate Mohammad Yunus will take oath in Bangladesh at 8 p.m. on Thursday , Army General Waqar Ur Zaman said on Wednesday.

Mr Yunus asked the youth to be calm and get ready to build the country . “ I congratulate the brave students who took the lead in making  ‘ Second Victory Day ‘ possible and to the people for giving total support to them . Let us make best use of the new victory.  “ he said in a press conference .

Released Chief Of BNP Khalida Zia called for immediate elections . BNP also held a rally on wednesday in which thousands participated .

 The situation in the country is yet to normalise . vandalism and looting persisted in some areas .

Many political parties hold their own rallies .

Many important officials Of Awami League party were absent , they went into hiding keeping their phones off .

Bodies of at least 29 Awami League party’s supporters were recovered on Tuesday .

Death toll in recent violence has reached 469 .

The Metropolitan Chambers Commerce of India ( MCCI )  on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the present situation saying that it Will impact Trade and businesses very badly .

India pulls out non essential staff , families and diplomat from Dhaka

With violence continuing in Bangladesh , India pulled out “ non essential staff “ and Family members of the Indian High commissioner at Dhaka on Wednesday . However the Indian High commission and consulates remained fully operational on Monday.

India continued to “ wait and watch “ the situation in Bangladesh for another day .

Sheikh Hasina has made no comment since her arrival at the Hindon Airbase. But her son Sajeed Wazed has said that she may be in India for an extended period .

Lok Sabha passes Finance bill , amends provision  for LTCG

Finance bill 2024 was passed on Wednesday , with an amendment  relaxing a proposal on Long term Capital gain ( LTCG ) tax on real estate .

Replying to debate in Parliament, the Finance Minister rejected criticism from the opposition that the middle class is heavily taxed .

Protests erupted in Parliament after the government did not take up an amendment  against the 18 % GST on insurance premiums .

Bill moves powers of waqf board ; Non Muslims and Women on board

The Union government  has proposed amendments in about 44 sections in Waqf Act 1995 .

Some of the major amendments are :

  • Union government proposes to strip waqf Board of its power to declare properties as its own
  • The bill proposes the inclusion of two Muslim women and two non Muslim members on board .
  • The property will not be mentioned as “ Waqf “
  • District collector will be the arbiter to declare property of the government or that Of waqf . Currently such decisions are made by the Waqf tribunal .
  • Board shall have at least one member each from Shia , Sunni  and other backward classes among Muslim Communities , and one member each from Bohra ,and Aghkhani community shall be nominated on board in the case they have functional assets in case of states and territory .
  • No waqf can be created without the execution Of a waqf deed . Under current Islamic law , waqf property can be created or property can be dedicated to waqf either in writing or orally .

A waqf is like a charitable trust . The properties  of waqf are donated by some one for  religious or charitable purposes .

The waqf board currently controls 8.7 lakh properties spanning 9.4 lakh acres across India . The estimated value of waqf is 1.2 lakh crore .

Collectively , this makes the waqf board the third largest owner of land in India after Army and Railways .

Muslim bodies have criticised this move by the government  , calling it interference In their religious matters .

All India Muslim Personal Law Board ( AIMPLB ) suggests that changes  in the act will make it easier for the government to usurp properties of Waqf  ,especially removing the Waqf tribunal as an arbitrator .

The government  claims that the Amendment is to provide better administration .

CJI led bench expunge high court judge’s remark against SC

A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud and four  senior most Judges Of Supreme Court held a special sitting on Wednesday,  to expunge remarks made by a High Court judge over Supreme Court (SC ) position in judiciary.

Justice Rajbjr Shehrawat of Punjab and Haryana High Court  during a proceeding had blamed the apex Court for “  presuming itself to be more ‘ Supreme ‘ than it actually is and High Court to be ‘ less High ‘ than it constitutionally is “

The court said that  the court was pained by the observation made and decided to take sho motu cognisance .

The CJI said that the livestreaming of court sessions was meant to provide citizens access to judicial proceedings , and not for judges  to make unwarranted observations.

Chandrayaan 3 team , ex IISc director  win top science award

33 Rashtriya Vigyan Award Will be given on national space day .

Noted biochemist and former director Of Indian Institute Of Science G Padmanabhan was announced  as winner of Vigyan Ratna .

The   Vigyan team award went to Chandrayaan 3 team .

13 scientists have been selected  for the Vigyan Sree award while 18 have been selected for the Vigyan Yuva award .

Mahinda’s son Namal to contest Sri Lanka Presidential election

Sri Lanka Podujana Pramudana ( SLPP ) the party of former president  Mahinda Rajpaksha has named Mahinda  Rajpaksha’s son Namal Rajpaksha as Presidential candidate for upcoming elections .

Mr Namal is a Hambantota legislator and former sports minister .

Current President Ranil Wockramshighe , opposition leader Sajith Premdasa , and National People’s party alliance Anura Kumar Dissyanke are among the major contenders in the Presidential race .

Military refused to enforce Curfew in Bangladesh , sealing Hasina’s  Fate

The night before Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh , the Army Chief held a meeting with his generals and decided that troops would not fire on civilians to enforce curfew  , two Army officers with knowledge of the discussions told Reuters.

General Waqar reached to PM Hasina and conveyed that his soldiers would not be able to implement the lockdown she had called for  .

The message was clear  : Ms Hasina no longer had the Army’s support .

Later when the situation spalled out of control she decided to leave the country .

Riots spread across town in UK , precipitated by disinformation and racism

Riots have spread in several towns and cities of the UK following the killing of three children in Southport on July 29 .

The riots were led by disinformation and misinformation that an undocumented migrant and Muslim was behind the attack .

The main suspect was neither a Muslim Nor Asylum seeker .

Following the southport incident , rioters attacked mosques . The riot spread in other parts of England And North Ireland .

The. Newly formed KEIR Starmer government  has said that attacks on Muslim Community wiKt.not be tolerated .

About 6000 police was mobilised for 30 gatherings that held on wednesday .

Iran executes 29 convicts a day after protesters hanging

Iran on Wednesday hanged 29 convicts in a single day .

26 people were executed in Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj outside Tehran , while three others were executed in Karaj’s city prison .

Iran has the highest execution rate in World . It has been repeatedly criticised by   human riots groups  over this.

Court ruling on Alderman shows Delhi’s vulnerability  to  centre’s dominance

The  editorial is about a recent judgement of the Supreme Court in which it held that it was statutory duty of LG of Delhi to appoint 10 persons of special  knowledge in MCD  ( Municipal Council of Delhi ) .

And LG didn’t need to take any advice from the Delhi Government in this regard .

SC referred to Delhi Municipal Act , 1957 which was amended in 1993 .

The petitioner was saying that LG should elect 10 Alderman only on the advice of Delhi government .

The editorial says that unlIke other states, the centre has power to alter any law made by the Delhihhh government . This accounts to interference in Delhi government  .
