SC to hear the plea to include CJI on EC selection panel

·         A petition  was filed in the Supreme Court by Association for Democratic  Reform ( ADR ) , the NGO in its plea had requested urgent hearing on the matter of how CEC and ECs need to be appointed .

·         It said that the center could take “ unfair advantage “ , while filling the post of two ECs .

·         The plea has demanded that the current vacancy be filled according to the March 2023 Judgement of the Supreme Court . Means the committee of Prime Minister (PM)  , Chief Justice of India (CJI)  and Leader of Opposition (LoP) should choose the ECs .

·         Also for future CJI should be back in the selection committee .

·         The Government recently passed a law according to which the committee of the PM , LoP and a Union Minister chose the EC .

·         SC has listed the case for Friday’s hearing .

·         Earlier .

Kerala rejects center’s one time offer  of ₹5000 crore  to  tide over fund crunch.

·         The Union government said on Wednesday that it could spare only ₹5000 crore as one time measure to avert an immediate financial crisis . Center further said that it would deduct the amount from the borrowing ceiling in the first nine months of financial year 2024 -25 .Also the state will not be allowed any “ ad hoc “ borrowing in 2024-25 if it takes ₹5000 crore .

·         Rejecting the offer , Kapil Sibbal representing Kerala said that it wants a minimum ₹10,000 crore .

·         The case will be heard next week .

·         Earlier , SC had given both parties time to settle the issue outside the court .

·         But the two sides were not able to meet any common ground .

Canadian probe in Nijjar’s case is not over : New Zealand  deputy  PM

·         New Zealand’s deputy PM and Foreign Minister Winston Piers was in India for four days.

·         In an interview with the Hindu , he said that Evidence in Canadian allegations about killing of Nijjar can only be established once investigation gets complete .

·         New Zealand is one of the Five Eyes grouping countries .

·         Five Eyes –Five Eyes is a  security alliance between five countries .  These are US , UK, Canada , Australia and New Zealand

SC denotify Assam Govt’s move to denotify Rhino habitat

·         The Supreme Court has frozen Assam govt’s move to withdraw a 1998 notification , constituting Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary .

·         The wildlife sanctuary hosts one of the largest Rhino Populations in  the country .

·         The state govt had reasoned that the declaration of wildlife sanctuary was made without settling the rights of people living in the village areas .

Gadakari , Thakur in BJP’s second list

·         BJP on Wednesday released a second list of candidates’ names on Wednesday . The list of 72 candidates covers 10 states and one Union territory.

·         Union Minister Nitin Gadakari  has been fielded from Nagpur , Anurag Thakur from Hamirpur , Prahalad Joshi from Dharwad and Piyush Joshi from Mumbai North .

PM launches portal for marginalized sections

·         PM on Wednesday launched Pradhan Mantri Samajik Uttathan evam Rojgar Adharit Jankalyan ( PM SURAJ ) portal for credit support to entrepreneurs from support to entrepreneurs from disadvantaged sections .

·         The portal will be a non-stop point where people from disadvantaged sections of society can apply for and  monitor the progress of all loans and credit schemes .

·         PM on this occasion disbursed ₹720 crore credit to one lakh beneficiaries .

Modi, British PM assess the progress on free trade agreement  negotiations

·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U K Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke on the phone on Tuesday  assessing the progress under Free Trade agreement ( FTA ) , Mr. Modi tweeted that he and Mr. Sunak had reaffirmed their commitment to the “ early conclusion “ of “ mutually beneficial “ agreement .

·         New Delhi and London both have been negotiating a deal since January 2022 , it is last days for the deal before both nations will go for election .

·         Union Information and Broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday launched PB SHABD .

·         OB SHABD is Prasad bahrti’s news Sharif service , and the revamped website is . It will provide daily news feeds  in videos , audios , text and other formats to subscribers .

Panel recommends ban on ‘ ferocious dogs’

·         An expert committee constituted by Department of Animal Welfare and Husbandry has , Ministry of Agriculture has recommended that certain breeds of “ ferocious dogs’ ‘ , be prohibited as being kept as pets .

·         The committee was constituted after a citizens group complained of fatal attacks by these dogs on people .

·         The breeds that are banned includes pitbull terrier , American Bulldog , Kangal , Asian Shepherd dog , Rottweiler , Terriers ,Rhodesian Terrier , Wolf dogs etc .

·         The rules are expected to be implemented by local authorities . Already existing dogs will be sterilized .

Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar to be called Ahilyanagar

·         The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday formally approved the renaming of Ahmednagar district to Ahilyanagar ,after 18 th century Maharashtra queen Ahilyabai Holkar .

·         Pushpa Kumar Dahal ‘ Prachanda ‘ on Wednesday won the vote of motion of confidence.

As parties rush aid to Gaza , EU says hunger being used as a weapon

·         Donor nations , aid agencies rushed to Gaza  and pushed efforts to reach  food and other essential items to Gaza by land , air and sea after EU top diplomat Josep Borrell said starvation had become a “ weapon of war “ .

·         Palestinians in Gaza are on the brink of famine , aid agencies are trying hard to deliver food and essential items .

·         A Spanish charity vessel was on its way to Gaza on Wednesday .

·         The flow of aid trucks from Egypt to Gaza ,has slowed recently .

·         About half a dozen Arab and western nations have  airdropped food parcels on Parachute into Gaza .

Russia ready to use nuclear weapons if sovereignty is threatened , says Putin

·         Russian President Vladimir Putin , said on Wednesday that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons if it’s sovereignty or independence is threatened .

·         In an interview on Wednesday Putin said  “ in line with the country’s security doctrine ,Moscow is ready to use nuclear weapons in case of threat to the existence of “ the existence of the Russian state , our Sovereignty and independence “ .

·         “ All that is written to our strategy, we haven’t changed that “ .

·         In an apparent reference to NATO he said “ the nations who say they have no red lines regarding Russia should realize that Russia had no red lines regarding them either . “
