Supreme Court grants Sisodia bail in Delhi Excise Policy case

The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Manish Susodia in Delhi excise policy case .

Mr Sisodia , the former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister is facing CBI and ED Charges of corruption and money laundering.

He has been in jail for the last 17 months .

The Supreme Court stressed that “ everyday counts in matters of personal liberty “ .

A bench of Justice BR Gavai and K.V . VIishwanath said the right to speedy trial and personal liberty is sacrosanct . The bail can not be withheld as punishment .

If the state , prosecution Agencies or even Court ,  do not have wherewithal to protect an accused right to speedy trial , they should not withheld bail on the ground that the alleged crime was serious .

Justice Gavai declined an oral plea by ED / CBI to bar Mr Sisodia from Delhi secretariat . The court said Mr Sisodia had deep roots in society and there was no possibility of him trying to  flee or tamper with evidence or influence witnesses .

Right to speedy trial is an integral part of   fundamental right under Article 21 .

Bail is not granted while the case is being stretched over a period   only in rare cases .

The Supreme Court recently expressed surprise  that some trial courts and High courts were not granting bail   even when the  accused is being held for a long time  , without conclusion of proceedings .

Article 21 : Right To life and personal liberty  .

No person shall be deprived of life and personal liberty except according to procedure established by law .

Supreme Court stays private college order banning hijab

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a directive issued by a private college in Maharashtra , prohibiting Muslim women from wearing Hijab or other symbols of their faith from campus .

“ Will you ban students from wearing a bindi or a Tilak? “   a bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked the lawyers appearing for Mumbai based MG Acharya and B K Marathe college.

The college had given the reason that the intention  was to draw attention away from the religion of students and to treat everyone equally on campus.

“ Will their names won’t reveal religion  ? Will you ask them to identify by numbers? “ Justice Kumar asked .

The row over wearing Hijab in educational institutions had earlier reached the Supreme Court . The Karnataka government had banned hijab in educational institutions in February 2022 .

The Supreme Court delivered a split verdict in September 2022 .

MHA creates committee to monitor safety of Indians , minorities in Bangladesh

The Union Home Ministry has created a committee led by senior BSF officials to communicate with Bangladesh authorities. “   to ensure  the safety and security of Indian nationals , Hindu or other minority communities living there “ , Union Minister Amit Shah said  on Friday.

A preliminary enquiry by the intelligence agency  has found that no major attack on India and other communities has been reported near the India Bangladesh border .

Since August 5 , four incidents have been reported of Bangladeshis crowding across the border , in north Bengal.  In all four cases they were persuaded to return. .

On Friday , more than 700 Bamgladeshis thronged  Siralkuchi border in Cooch Behar district , demanding entry to India .

There were no women and children  in the crowd .  They were persuaded to return with the help of Borders Guard Bangladesh (BGB ) .

Government says ‘ creamy layer ‘ is not applicable to SC ST quota .

The Union cabinet on Friday categorically asserted that the category of creamy layer does not apply to reservations of Scheduled CAstes (SCs ) and Scheduled Tribes ( STs ) .

“ This ground is committed to the constitutional provision given by Babashaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar “  Ashwini Vaishnav Said after the meeting.

The Supreme Court with a majority of 6:1 , in a recent verdict had permitted states to divide sub quota in SC and ST  to give more reservation  to those not adequately benefitted.

The court with a majority of 4:3 had held that states must evolve a policy to identify “ creamy layer “ among SC and ST.

69 Indians still with Russian army , eight killed S Jaishankar

Over the past nine months 91 Indians have been recruited in Russian army and eight have been killed ,

EAM S Jaishankar told in Lok Sabha  .

69 of them are still awaiting release from the Russian Army .

During his recent visit to Russia , PM Modi had “ personally “ raised the issue with Russian President Valdmir Putin .

PM Modi had got assurance from President Putin that any Indian in the Russian army will be released and returned  .

EAM said that it was important  to hold the Russian government  in their words .

AIMIM  Asawuddin Owaisi had raised the issue of whether India Will stop buying Russian oil if Russia  doesn’t return Indians in their army .

Opposition  parties move to prepare no – confidence motion against V-P

On the last day of the Budget session of Parliament , the opposition walked out of Rajya Sabha after  chairman Jagdeep Dhanakr  had a heated exchange of words with MP Jaya Bacchan  .

The opposition  members have decided to bring no confidence motion against the Chairman .

About 50 MPs have come to sign a resolution for this .

Opposition MPs have alleged that they are not given space and time to speak , many times Opposition leader Mallikarjuna Kharge’s Mike is turned Off , and Rajya Sabha chairman makes personal remarks against members .

The revolution will be brought in the next session of Parliament,   as Friday was the last day of the budget session .

Article 67 ( B)  states that a Vice president can be removed by passing a resolution with effective majority in Rajya Sabha . And passed by a simple majority in Lok Sabha .

Looking at numbers it doesn’t seem that the resolution will be passed.

21 Lok Sabha 10 Rajya Sabha members in JPC on waqf bill

 The government on Friday,  announced a 31 member Joint  Parliamentary committee  ( JPC )  to examine Wakf Amendment bill  2024 .

The committee will have 21 members from Lok Sabha and 10 members from Rajya Sabha . JPC will submit its report by the last day of the first week of the next session.

India to roll Out New treatment regimen for drug resistant TB

India is getting to roll Out the BPaL ( Bedaquiline , Pretomanid and Linezolid regimen for all multi drug resistant tuberculosis ( MDR – T B ) and Extensively Resistant Drug – TB  ( XDR -T B ) patients .

This was announced by Saumya Swaminathan , Principal Advisor, national TB Elimination programme .

BPaL will bring down treatment time to 6 months from the current 18 to 24 months   . It is also cheaper for health systems and patients .

The new drug regimen has indicated good results in countries like Pakistan , South Africa and Ukraine .

TB affects lungs .

Under the National Health Mission ( NHM ) , India has aimed to make India “ Tuberculosis free “ by 2025 which is 5 years ahead of the global target .

In 2023 reported death by TB was 2.3 lakh which was down from  2022 when this Figure was 3.2 lakh .

Yunus vows to save constitution as interim Government begins work In Dhaka

Mohammad Yunus , who held the office of “  Chief Advisor “ in the interim government, set out on Friday to restore “ law and order “ .

“ Number one challenge is law and order “Touhid Hussain, who has taken foreign ministry portfolio, told reporters .

Mr Yunus wants to hold an election within a few months , an army personnel in the current government said .

Most of the members Of Awami League party have gone into hiding after revenge attacks against them .

Mrs. Hasina’s son had said that her mother would return to Bangladesh once peace is restored . There is speculation that Ms Hasina can take part in the elections .
