Seven babies killed in Delhi Hospital fire

Seven new born babies were charged to death after a Children’s hospital in Vivek Vihar colony in Delhi caught fire on Saturday night .

The owner of the hospital has been arrested . Police said that the hospital’s licence had expired .

Rajkot inferno toll climbs 33 ;over 15 persons are still missing

At least 33 people got killed in the fire that broke out on Saturday evening at the TRP gaming zone in Rajkot . More than 15 persons are still missing .

The Gujarat high Court on Monday took suo Motu cognisance of the incident and posted it for the hearing on Monday .

The court called the incident a “ Man made disaster “.

  The police have lodged an FIR against six people and two have been arrested . The organisers had not applied for a fire NOC ( No objection certificate ) .

The state government has not given any figures on missing and casualties yet .

Remal makes landfall : One lakh evacuated in Bengal

The Severe Cyclonic storm Remal started its landfall between Sagar island in West Bengal Khepupara in Bangladesh at 9:15 PM on Sunday . By 11:30 PM a cyclone storm touched the land .

To prevent loss of life, the West Bengal administration had evacuated people from low lying and coastal areas of South 24 Pargana , North 24 Pargana and Purba Medinipur to storm shelters .

 over one lakh people were shifted from coastal and vulnerable areas  to safe areas .

Many trains have been cancelled. Howrah .

A Red Alert has been issued  for fishermen . 14 teams of NDRF have been deployed in coastal areas .

Wary Jharkhand labourers return home from unrest hit Manipur

Last week one of the labourers from Jharkhand was killed and two labourers were injured by armed miscreants in Imphal .

This is the first such incident on non locals since conflict between Meitie and Kuki started last year .

This has resulted in  labourers from Jharkhand returning back from Manipur En Masse .

Centre in its systement behind UAPA ban on seven militant groups in Manipur had cited such attacks on non locals as one of the reasons.

India records trade deficit with 9 of top 10 trading partners in 2023 – 2024

India has recorded a trade deficit with nine out of top 10 trading partners .

China has emerged as the biggest trading partner of India in 2023 -24  . Only with trade with the US India has a positive trade balance .

Trade balance – Export – Import .

If the trade balance is positive then it is trade surplus . If the trade balance is negative then it is a trade deficit  means  Import is higher than export .

Trade deficit generally weakens countries currency reserves .

The trade deficit  is not always a bad thing . In certain cases like importing raw material  , it is not necessarily bad for the economy .

Israel PM ‘opposed’  to ending the war in Gaza , convenes War cabinet

The Israeli Prime Minister convened a war meeting on Sunday , in which he said that he “ strongly opposes “ ending the war in Gaza , ahead of his war cabinet .

Meanwhile , heavy fighting emerged in Gaza . Hamas fired several rockets on Tel Aviv  for the first time in months .

Hamas is continuously demanding ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli forces. But Netanyahu said that it will give time for Hamas to reunite and an October 7 like attack will happen again

Saudi appoints Syria ambassador after more than a decade

Saudi Arabia sent a new ambassador to Damascus on Sunday . Last year the two nations started to talk after the Syrian Civil war was over .

At least 134 , including one MSF worker killed in clashes across Sudan’s El Fasher

At least 134 have died in a single hospital in Darfur city of El Fasher in Western Sudan , Doctors without borders said on Sunday .

Civil war had started in Sudan last year between Army chief Abdel Fatah Al Burhan and Parliamentary Rapid Support Forces ( RSF ) .

Nearly a million people fled from coastal regions to concrete shelters before the cyclone hit Bangladesh .

Authorities have raised the danger signal to highest level .

ECI should do everything to reinforce faith in the democratic process

A total 58 Lok Sabha seats in eight states voted on Saturday in the sixth phase .

Polling is completed in 486 Lok Sabha constituencies in 28 states .Voting is also over in 105 Lok Sabha constituencies of Odisha .

The voting percentage in the sixth phase was highest in West Bengal ( 79 % ) . Anantnag Rajouri  recorded a turnout of 54.30 %  , which is highest in the constituency .

Delhi faced “ urban Apathy “ and the voting percentage here was seen to be 57.67 %.

The Election Commission of India ( ECI ) for the first time  released data on the absolute number of votes cast in each phases .

Earlier The Supreme Court of India refused to direct the Commission to disclose details of form 17 C.  The form 17 C contains data on polling in each constituency .

The editorial says that though  SC has done well to publish some data that was not published in the previous election , measures need to be taken  to make things more transparent .

The editorial talks about the recent verdict of the International Court of Justice ( ICJ ) on Gaza . Israeli Occupation in Gaza

The International Court of Justice’s ruling that Israel must immediately stop its offensive in Gaza . ICJ directed Israel  to open Rafah border for aid delivery . It directed Israel to allow UN investigators to gather information regarding war crimes in Gaza .

Earlier ICC judgement had warranted Israeli PM Netanyahu , defence minister Yoah Gallant and three Hamas leaders .

Despite all these, Israel is continuing with its offensive in Rafah . The editorial says that by doing this Mr Netanyahu is making Israel weaker and leaving the  cause of Palestinian stronger .

An Overview of Europe’s AI convention

The Council of Europe ( COE ) on May 17  re-adopted  “ Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence , Human Rights and Democracy and Rule of Law “ also known as “ AI convention” .

A “ framework Convention “ is a legally binding treaty that specifies the broader commitment and initiatives under convention , and set mechanisms to achieve them .

The convention does not create a new human rights principle , but asserts that human and fundamental rights that are protected by International and National laws will stay protected at the time of application of AI systems as well .

The Council of Europe ( COE ) currently has 46 members .

What is the current status with respect to spice export

Last month Singapore and Higkong returned a certain spice mix product of MDH and Everest alleging high levels of Ethylene Oxide ( ETO ) , The Indian authorities have now initiated several.measures to ensure that Indian spices comply with food safety standards .

ETO is a sterilising agent which is used to decontaminate the product . Many of the manufacturer get their initial products from Mandis and then uses ETO for decontamination .

The spice Board of India has issued detailed protocol to all the manufacturers to prevent ETO manufacturing .

The board also said that it was starting mandatory testing of Spice consignments exported to Hong Kong and Singapore .
