Yunus led Bangladesh interim government sworn In
Mohammad Yunus , took charge as chief advisor of the interim government in Bangladesh .
He took oath from President Shahabuddin in a ceremony at 9:20 PM .
A total of 17 members have been included as advisors of the interim government . Apart from Mr Yunus , 13 others took oath on Thursday .
Military officers ,Bangladesh NationaL Party ( BNP ) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam , and diplomats from the U.K , Japan , China , the Philippines , Iran ,Argentina , Qatar , the Netherlands and the UAE were present at the ceremony .
No one from Awami League , Sheikh Hasina’s party was present .
In his speech he expressed Bangladesh as “ one big family” and said the young protesters had given them “ a new birth. “ . However he condemned the recent violence against country’s religious minorities ,
Bangladesh saw large-scale violence , looting and attacks on public and private properties on Thursday , in the absence of government and enforcement agencies .
Bangladesh Army ,along with other law enforcement agencies said that they would take strict action to the ongoing violence .
Meanwhile , spokesperson of US state department Mathew Miller said that the US believes that the interim government should respect democratic principles , the rule of law , and the will of Bangladeshi people . He said that the interim government will play a vital role in establishing long term peace and stability in Bangladesh .
PM urges Yunus to ensure Protection of minorities
PM Narendra Modi has urged Muhammad Yunus , who took charge as head of Bangladesh interim government on Thursday , to ensure the “ safety and protection of all Hindus and all other minority communities “ in the country .
“ My best wishes to Professor Mohammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibility . We hope for an early return of normalcy , ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities .
India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfil the shared aspirations of both our people for peace ,security and development “ , the PM said in his message to Mohd Yunus .
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reminded Dhaka that it is the task of “ every government “ to protect its citizens .
MEA is in touch with the Hasina government to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in Bangladesh , Mr Jaiswal said .
The MEA spokesperson declined to comment on a question about days for which Sheikh Hasina will be in India .
He maintained that “ it is for her to take things forward “ .

RBI holds repo rate 6.5 % for 9 th time in a row
The 6 member Monetary Policy Committee ( MPC ) met for the first time after the budget on Thursday .
MPC with a vote 4:2 decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged to 6.5 % for the ninth consecutive time .
The Standing deposit Facility rate remains at 6.25%, while the bank rate is 6.75% .
Explaining the rationale behind the decision , RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that Headline inflation, after remaining at 4.8% in April and May , had increased to 5.1% in June .
The increase is primarily due to food inflation .
The food inflation recorded in June was 9.36%, up from 8.69% in May .
Food inflation makes 46% in the CPI basket , but it currently contributes 75% of headline inflation .
Increase in vegetable prices has been the sharpest among food commodities .
Headline Inflation includes food , energy , and other commodities .
Core inflation is about inflation excluding food and energy .
Increasing policy rates decreases inflation , while decreasing increases inflation.
MPC is the body which decides on policy rates . It has six members , the RBI governor being one of the members . MPC meets at least four times a year to decide on Policy rates .
The decision is made by voting. In case of a tie in voting, the governor’s opinion takes course .
Waqf bill goes to JPC after an acrimonious debate in Lok Sabha
The waqf ( Amendment ) bill ,2024 has been referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee ( JPC ) on Thursday .
The bill was introduced on Thursday by Union Minority minister Kiran Rijiju . The bill saw about two hours long debate in which opposition members accused that the bill was to target Muslim community .
Mr Rijiju said that the bill was introduced based on the suggestion of a committee formed during Congress rule .
The bill seeks to change Waqf Act 1995 .
The bill proposes inclusion of two Muslim women and two non muslim members on the board .
District Collector has been made as an arbiter under the conflict of whether the land is of government or waqf . In the previous act the decision was made by the Wakf Tribunal .
A separate section has been added to prevent the wrongful declaration of property as “ waqf “ .
A JPC is an ad hoc body . It is set up for a specific object and period . JPC is set by a motion passed in one house and agreed by another .
The number of members from Lok Sabha is double the number of members from Rajya Sabha in the committee .
Govt amends CAA rules on documents to prove foreign origin
The Union Home ministry has amended the provisions of rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act ( CAA ) .
Schedule 1A of CAA requires applicants seeking citizenship to submit a document by Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh authority to prove their roots to those countries .
The amendment in Schedule 1A has been expanded to include any document issued by state or Union government or any quasi judicial authority . An “ etc “ has been added to give description to officials in case of any shortcoming in documents .
No clinical trial for drugs approved in select nations
In a decision that will make drugs manufactured outside India more accessible and affordable in the local market , the Union government has decided to waive the requirement of clinical trials in India if drugs are approved in the US , UK , Japan , Australia , Canada or the European Union .
The waiver will be for five categories of new drugs : Drugs for rare diseases , gene and cellular therapy , new drugs used in pandemic situations , new drugs used for special defence purposes and new drugs having significant therapeutic advances over the current standard care .
The move will enhance access to cutting edge treatment .
Bihar govt. mandates registration of temples and trusts
The Bihar government on Thursday , mandated registration of temples , mutts and trusts . It directed the District Magistrates in states to ensure that bodies are registered and details of their immovable properties are submitted to Bihar State Board to Religious Trust ( BCBST ) .
Under construction bridge collapses in Bihar’s Katihar ; 14 th such incident since June
A bridge constructed across the Ganga at Bakia Sukhay in Bihar’s Katihar district collapsed on Thursday .
This is the 14 th such instance of bridge collapse since June .
The bridge was being constructed by the Rural Works department and was expected to be inaugurated soon .

Sheikh Hasina will be back in Bangladesh , as soon as democracy is restored , Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy said.
He said this in an interview , however he did not make it clear whether she will be back as “ retired or active “ .
He asserted that members of Sheikh Mujib’s family will neither abandon its people nor leave beleaguered Awami League in the lurch .
He expressed gratitude to PM Modi and the Indian government for protecting his mother and appealed to India to build International consensus and exert pressure on Bangladesh to restore democracy .
Israel evokes status of Norway envoys to Palestine
Israel said on Thursday that it was revoking the diplomatic status of Norway’s envoy to the Palestinian authority .
Israel accused Oslo of “ anti Israel behaviour “ during the Gaza war .
Norway has said the decision to be an “ extreme “ step by Israel , that will affect the ability to help Palestinian people .
Norway recently recognised the Palestinian state . Norway had also supported ICC verdict to arrest Isreali PM Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoah Gallant on genocide charges .
Norway currently has its embassy for Palestinian authority in Jerusalem . They mostly function in the West Bank . With this order the activities of this embassy will be closed .
Russia battles Ukriainians for third day after major incursion in Kursk region
Russian forces were battling Ukrainian troops for the third day on Thursday , after they entered the Kursk region of Russia on August 6 .
In one of the biggest Ukrainian attack on Russia , around 1000 Ukrainian troops with tanks and armoured vehicles along with , with drones in the sky swept through forest and fields to the Russian border town of Siddha .
Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “ major provocation “ .
The US said that it had no prior knowledge of the attack .
Russia chief of defence staff Valery Gashkov told President Putin that the Ukrainian offensive has been halted in the border region .
He further said that Ukraine had lost 82 armoured vehicles including eight tanks .
Ukraine has not commented on this .
