Hasina quits , flees Bangladesh , lands in India

Bangladesh PrimeMinister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled from the country when she arrived at Hindon airbase in New Delhi . He is seeking asylum in the UK .

What happened in Bangladesh on Monday :

Students group :  Students against Discrimination ‘ has called a ‘March to Dhaka ‘ campaign demanding  Ms Hansina’s resignation.

Thousands started gathering at the main points of Dhaka defying curfew orders .

Police stopped them but could not hold as the number of protesters  was very large .

At 3 PM local time , police breached the gates of the official residence of Ms Hasina , and entered its premises . Ms Hasina resigned . She was airlifted on a Mi17 helicopter which landed in Agartala . She boarded C130 to land at Hindon air force station in New Delhi . She met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Air Force Western Air Command Air Marshal P.M .Sinha at Hindon .

She is expected to  stay in India for a night or two as she awaits approval for asylum in the UK .

Her sister Rehana, who is accompanying her , already holds a UK passport .

Army Chief takes over ; interim government will be formed

In Dhaka , Army chief  Waker Uz Zaman confirmed her resignation.  In a press conference he said that therein is in the Army’s hand for now .

He urged protestors to stop the unrest and pledged to meet their demands and bring justice to those who were killed .

He said that he would hold talks with opposition parties and civil society members , but not the Awami league , Sheikh Hasina’s party .

An interim government will be formed .

What led to the resignation of Sheikh Hasina ?

A Student protest had started against 30 % reservation for the descendents of 1971 Bangladesh Independence movement .

PM Sheikh Hasina called the protesters ‘ Razakars ‘ , which is a derogatory term used for those who helped the Pakistani army during the 1971 independence  movement .

Protest turned violent and more than 150 protesters were killed . The Internet was shut down , and the army was called to take over security .

On July 21 , Bangladesh Supreme Court scrapped the 30 % quota and reduced it to 5% .

This halted students protest .  Students demand apology from PM Sheikh Hasina for the death of protesters and for her words against them . They refused any talk with her .

On July 29 , students resumed their protest demanding resignation of Mrs Hasina . The Internet was suspended , and more than 300 died in clashes between protesters and those who were pro government .

Sheikh Hasina in her address on August 4, called the protesters as ‘ terrorists ‘ , and said that they will be dealt with firmly .

On August 5 , Students breached security , entered her house . She resigned and landed in India.

In elections held in January , Awami League party of Sheikh Hasina got 225 seats out of a total of 300 seats . This was Ms Hasina’s fourth consecutive term as Prime Minister of Bangladesh .

India silent as Hasina flees Bangladesh amid unrest

On Monday , the External Affairs Ministry made no statement about the situation in Bangladesh or on Ms Hasina on Monday .

In the evening , PM Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security ( CCS )  . EAM S Jaishankar briefed PM Modi about the situation in Bangladesh .

On Sunday , the Ministry of External Affairs had issued an advisory “ strongly advising “ Indian nationals not to travel to Bangladesh and asking those in the country to exercise “  extreme caution “ while moving around .

Train services between India and Bangladesh have been suspended by the Indian government .

Extra personnel has been deployed along the border , says BSF .

Security has been beefed up to the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh .

L- G can  nominate 10 aldermen to Delhi corporation , rules SC

The Supreme Court on Monday held that the authority of Lieutenant Governor (L- G ) of Delhi to nominate 10 persons in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD ) is a statutory dutybh and not bound by aid and advice of the council of Ministers .

Three Judge constitutional Bench  headed by CJI DY Chadrachud had reserved the jisfegement in the case on May 17 , 2023 .

The Bench held that the power of L -G is derived from section 3 (3) ( b) (1) of Delhi Municipal Corporation  Act , 1957 . The act was amended in 1993 , to vest the power to  nominate 10 expert persons .

The petiton filed by AAP government had said that democratically elected government be allowed to run MCD without interference from L-G .

“ This is a law made by Parliament … The law requires L-G to exercise power “ the court noted .

HC upholds Kejriwal’s arrest by CBI in excise case

Delhi High court on Monday rejected the bail plea of Arvind Kejriwal .

The court  in another case also said that there was no malice on the part of CBI arresting Arvind Kejriwal .

“ It can not be said that the arrest was without any injusticiable reason or illegal “ .

Mr Kejriwal’s plea had asked the high court to declare all his arrest by CBI as illegal .

CBI had arrested Mr Kejriwal  from Tihar jail on June 26 . Earlier  lower court had rejected the bail plea .

The court held that only after only after collecting sufficient evidence in April 2024 , CBI proceeded for the arrest of Mr Kejriwal . Court also said that there were links of this crime even in Punjab , but witnesses could come in front only after arrest of Mr Kejriwal by ED .

Two of the witnesses has also turned to approver .

Justify inclusion of 77 castes in OBC list : SC to Bengal government

The Supreme Court ( SC ) on Monday gave the “ opportunity” to justify  inclusion of 77 castes largely Muslim community in the list of State’s Other Backward Community ( OBC ) list .

On May 22 , Calcutta High court had strike down the inclusion of several of these castes in OBC list . West Bengal government later .over to SC .

The SC asked the state to present the nature of survey and material in possession that led state to  include these castes in OBC list .

The petitioner a private respondent had said that there was meaning ful consultation with West Bengal Backward Class Commission  with respect to designation of 37 of these communities .

Procedure for inclusion of a casts in SC /ST / OBC list – Under Article 341 and 342 of constitution , state government has power to include a community in SC / ST / OBC list .  Buy this needs approval from Registrar General of India ( RGI ) and National Commission of Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe / Backward Classe , NCSC /NCST / NCBC  .

Revocation of Article 370 a ‘ watershed moment ‘ : Modi

On the anniversary of scrapping Article 370 from J&K , PM Modi called it a ‘ watershed moment  in nation’s history ‘ this started ‘ a new era of progress ‘ in Union territory .

NPAs on Mudra loan has come down

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed the Lok Sabha on Monday that Non Performing Assets ( NPA ) under Mudra Loan has come down to 3.4 % in FY 24  , a significant decline from 4.77% in 2020- 21 .

UN seeks urgent de escalation  in West Asia ; Iran reserves right to strike back

The UN High commissioner for human rights   Volker Turk on Monday called for an urgent de escalation in West Asia , over fears that Gaza war could spread .

Iran on. Monday said that it had “ legal right to punish “ Israel over last week’s killing of Hamas Leader Ismail Haineyeh in Tehran .

Israel has not commented on the killing . There is fear that Iran can join along with Hezbollah in a retalliatory strike .

Israel is exchanging daily cross border fire with Hezbollah .

Gaza’s civil defense agency said that it received the bodies of 80 unidentified Palestinians from Israel on Monday .

Nine UNRWA employees ‘ may have been involved ‘ in oct 7 , Hamas attack , says UN

United nations said on Monday , that nine employees of its agency for Palestinian Refugees ( UNRWA ) ,” may have been involved in “ October 7 attack on southern Israel by Hamas .

“ We have sufficient information to take the action to take the action that we are taking — that is to say , termination of these nine individuals “ , UN Spokesperson. Farhan Haq said .

Earlier this year Israel had alleged that about 19 UNRWA employees may have been involved in October 7 attack by Hamas .

UNRWA is aid agency of UN which works particularly to facilitate humanitarian aid , education and health in West Asia . It runs many schools and hospitals and aid services in Gaza .

Australia lifts terror threat level to from ‘ possible ‘ to ‘ probable ‘

The Australian gobernment has increased the terror threat alert level from “ possible “ to “ probable “ , citing concern about increasing radicalisation among young people and community tension after Israel Hamas war .
